The Process of Moving Overseas

Packers were at the house 5 hours today. The movers come tomorrow morning. Biggest thing I learned today was...don’t let your children take anything off while they pack because it will get packed. Mateo and Nico took their shoes off and put them on the shoe rack just like every other time we come home and when we went to leave they couldn’t find their shoes. 🀣🀣

Luckily it was in the last box the ladies packed and they knew right where they were. I was so tired I would have let them leave barefoot and bought them both new shoes another time.πŸ™„πŸ™„

Other things I learned...
*going through each room beforehand and throwing away anything that’s old or that you can’t take (flammable) speeds up the process.
*leave lots of toilet paper, hand soap, and paper towels in your bathroom because everyone has to pee a lot.
*leave out boxes of snack, sandwich, and gallon size ziplock bags they come in very handy.
*start a container with all of your labeled hardware. This should be the last box to get taped up.
*take apart what you can before they come, this guarantees that you will have all of the hardware to reassemble the items. Thank me later for this one!!
*if you box anything up don’t tape off the tops and write contents on the outside of each box. This made everything go so fast for us.
*everyone loves candy and snacks, keep some sitting out for convenience and bursts of energy 🀣
*if you pack anything in boxes ahead of time tape the boxes correctly. Not your way but the way the professionals do it. It saves them from having to go back behind you and re-taping. It also means the bottoms won't fall out of the boxes. Thank me later for this one too! Watch the video by clicking the link below.

I have been asked quite a bit lately "Why are you packing stuff if the movers are paid to do it?" Because I want to. Because it was totally worth it for the packers to be at my house for 5 hours instead of 2 full days. I know this isn't always ideal, and I probably could have done quite a bit less than I did. But I liked how I had control to separate items how I wanted to and pack my extra special items with that care that comes only from the one that built all of the lego mechs. Haha some of you may have missed that Facebook post. I asked for advice on how to pack and ship built Lego's. I wrapped them with packing paper, filling any empty spaces with more paper, or adding support with balls of packing paper. Then I placed each built item in its own small trash bag in case pieces did fall off they would be contained. I left air in the bag and tied it off. I then placed them all inside of the heavy duty totes with tons of extra packing paper and labelled them fragile. HAHA When the packers asked me if there was glass in those I had to laugh and say nope, they are just built Lego's. I will have to let those that are interested know if they make the pack/ship/crate journey to Italy in one piece.

Jewelry was another very tedious task. I have a huge jewelry box and did lots of research on Pinterest before starting to pack it up. I found that using buttons for your earrings keeps them paired off really great. Place all of your buttons in a bag and they are double secure. As far as my necklaces I laid out some cling wrap tacky side up and laid out some necklaces about an inch apart. Then I put another piece of the cling wrap sticky side down and pressed the pieces together. Then I rolled up the necklaces and placed them in a gallon ziploc bag. I placed my rings on a ribbon and tied it off and then placed that in a ziploc bag. Taking these steps with the jewelry and pre-boxing really made me feel so much better about nothing accidentally walking off. Of course don't do this with your diamonds people, you should probably travel with those.

It has been such a long day but I know a lot of military friends and some of this information could come in really handy for them.

Less than a month and my family will be reunited. Then, off to Italy.
